Zoom utilize 90 days data freeze for privacy data encryption

Zoom is set to let paying customers to pick which data center calls, which can be routed through starting from April 18th. Zoom company had announced in a blog post today.

The changes occurred as a result of a report published from the University of Toronto Citizen Lab which found that Zoom generated encryption keys for some of its users from a server in China, though none of the users were located from the report.

According to a report from Zoom, it says "paying customers will be able to opt-in or out of a specific data center region. Zoom also published it had grouped its data center into the following regions: Canada, China, India, Japan/Hong Kong, US, Australia and Latin America.

Zoom company also made a policy that says users on the company free tier won't be able to change their default data center region. It also says though customers outside China won't be able to have their data routed through the country.

According to a report published on April 3rd, by Citizen Lab, it described how Zoom's encryption system/scheme uses keys generated by servers in China. This could mean the Chinese government could demand Zoom to disclose those encryption keys to the government in China.

Zoom CEO Eric Yuan also said, the eagerness to add server capacity meet the massive need for Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic, he also added.

"We failed to fully implement our usual geo-fencing best practices" and this could have made it possible for certain meetings to connect to systems in China."

Although he added, that these errors had been patched and corrected.

Zoom CEO also announced in his first April blog post, that Zoom would start utilizing a 90-day feature freeze which would focus/ensure fixing of any detected privacy and security issues. 

He also added, "Zoom had moved from 10 million daily users in December to more than 200 million daily users in March as people troop to its service while at home due to the pandemic.
